Roses, lavender, lemon verbena and drifts of basil provide an aromatic delight on the slope that leads to the vegetable garden atop the garage. A caretaker’s cottage, orangery, windmill and refurbished barn come together with the garage to form a protected central courtyard.
This vantage point shows the location of the main house, which is accessible via a driveway that weaves through Japanese maples before arrival. The same driveway splits to the right and leads to the property’s working realm. Toward the center, solar panels help control the water temperature of the swimming pool. And at the top, a small pavilion signals the starting place for the water rill.
Landscape architect Diane Devore revived an existing cutting garden located outside the back door of the main residence and filled it with common cooking herbs, including chives, parsley, rosemary, tarragon and thyme. Just beyond, retaining walls made from a combination of round and rectilinear stones intersect the expanse of lawn that is organically maintained and intentionally mowed high to use less water.
The courtyard view shows the big glass doors that lead to the inside of the orangery and a trio of garage doors that form the base of the remodeled barn constructed on the interior with the remnants of the original 1850s barn.

A hallway connects the barn to the windmill topped with residential wind turbines that generate power at a very low wind speed. Inside, there’s a powder room on the main level and a stairwell that leads to a room for poker parties.
The chemical-free pool is cleaned by a state-of-the-art sand filtration system that mandates water temperatures of less than 86 degrees to be effective.Solar panels cool the water at night to maintain the right temperature range.
Set into the patio, the water garden overflows with lotus and water lilies.
Raspberry fences were designed to hold the brambles in place and to facilitate picking.
