Ascot Floral Print, Scalamandré.The Quilt Pattern: “Diamonds With Sashing is a really straightforward quilt. I tilted the block on the diagonal to create a diamond formation instead of a square. The sashing border goes around the block. The large-scale prints of these dramatic wallpapers necessitated a larger format.”
The Wallpapers: Geometric prints in bright teals, aqua and hot pink are combined with metallics for a Pop-art design within a design. 1. Rope, Clay McLaurin Studio 2. Rayo, Scion 3. Chareau, Designers Guild. The Quilt Pattern: “Piece Triangles started with using a lot of the geometric prints that I felt spoke to each other. The other driving factor on this one was grouping the aquas and teals together. I specifically used the really hot pink metallic one as a random odd ball, so there places where the hot pink metallic functions as a dark and sometimes as a light—it was meant to move your eye across the piece.”
The Wallpapers: Triangles radiate out from a center diamond, incorporating bold colors, layers of pattern and the “accidental mistakes” so common in quilting. 1. Proxmire, Kravet 2. Fleur, Weitzner 3. Intarsiato, Dedar 4. Nuevo, Scion. The Quilt Pattern: “The medallion construction of the Sawtooth Diamond begins with a center square and you build out layers around it. There are all these triangles radiating out, creating the sawtooth design. Frequently quilt patterns were named after things found on the farm: Log cabin, fence rail, sawtooth.”

Stine, Sandberg. The Quilt Pattern: “Fence Rail is a really, really simple pattern, and an old one. It involves a triple bar within a block and you just change the direction of the blocks to create the rails. The thing here was using all the pinks that we had and integrated the really lovely dark blue.”

I did this one in a more traditional color palette of Colonial blues, ochres, gold and reds.”
The Wallpapers: A well-known quilt pattern, the dominant square in a log cabin quilt represents the door or hearth of the home. Cow Parsley, Cole & Son 5. Flirt aquatique, Élitis 6. Honesty, Clarke & Clarke 7. Forma, Scion. The Quilt Pattern: “Traditional Log Cabin is not one of the oldest, but one of the best-known quilt patterns. It begins with a center square and builds out the way an actually log cabin house would—think about Lincoln logs and how they stack, two here, two there. You make the block and then you can twist and turn it in a million different ways and you get all these different patterns. It is one of the most versatile quilt patterns.”
Referencing the beauty, tradition and workmanship of American quilt design, textile artist Richard Killeaney created a series of quilts comprised of more than 50 fashion-forward wallpapers rich in color, pattern and creativity. In an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview with the artist, we learned how he began quilting, what design philosophy he lives by, and more.
