All summer, people look forward to the Hampton Designer Showhouse and the wonders it will reveal. A total home transformation accomplished by designers of all styles and design philosophies, it promises imaginative inspiration for all who walk through.
The 21st edition of the Hampton Designer Showhouse just took place Southampton’s at historic Ivy Lodge, raising funds for the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. The shingle-style abode, which dates back to the mid-1800s, was masterfully reimagined by 22 design firms to show its storied spaces in an entirely new way.
Dee Ann Federico, principal of Dee Ann Design, was invited to redesign the kitchen, a pivotal space in anyone’s home. Together with JennAir’s boundary-pushing, bold appliances supplied by P.C. Richard & Son, her “Coastal Moderne” vision came to life.
To understand Federico’s approach to the space, you have to start with the structure itself. Built in the 1830s and situated close to Southampton’s beaches, Ivy Lodge has been standing near the coast for almost two centuries. Originally part of the Mayo Family Farm, the home is now surrounded by a nature preserve protected by the Peconic Land Trust, which protects Long Island’s working farms, natural lands, and heritage.
A Southampton paradise, the 7,500-square-foot main residence is enveloped in trees with thoughts of beach days or evening swims never far. Federico describes that “the home itself and the property are the perfect reflection of the land and the sea.”
Embracing that notion entirely, the designer made her first choice for the project: The cabinets would be blue. “My goal with this kitchen was to create a beautiful marriage between the cutting-edge JennAir appliances and the existing traditional cabinetry by painting it a gorgeous high-gloss oceanic blue/green reminiscent of Deco style—thus creating Coastal Moderne.” Reimagining the current cabinetry fit the four-week timeline for the project and was also the best choice environmentally.
Next, Federico sought to balance the rich blue tone by selecting countertop material from Cosentino with an oyster white base and light veining in silvery gray and subtle blue. The tiles from The Tile Shop were specifically chosen for their coastal qualities. The backsplash is a stunning marble mosaic with mother of pearl accents and the subway tiles have an artisanal wave-like quality with a pearlized grey lustre finish, much like the inside of a shell.
Special accents like the piece of art Federico happened upon at William Ris Gallery—“Beyond the Clouds” by David Lyttleton Smith—and the spectacular Blue Celestite crystals, coral, and shells found at Blooming Shells in Sag Harbor are especially dear to the designer.
When it came time to choose the appliances, Federico looked to JennAir’s two striking design expressions: RISE™ and NOIR™. Forged in mixed metals with robust lines, it was the RISE™ Design Expression that called to her.
“As soon as I saw the JennAir RISE™ range with the brass accents on the knobs, it was love at first sight. It gave me the ability to bring in the satin brass finish, which I had wanted to add from inception. I was able to use satin brass cabinet pulls, and in the stove area, I also added a little brass liner with the marble to complete the look. I love the knurled texture on the refrigerators and dishwashers, and the black interiors of the refrigerators are très, très chic.”
Elevating the kitchen’s design and luxury factor, the high-performance appliances are also ideal for the Hamptons lifestyle of nonstop entertaining. A dream for caterers to use for large-scale parties or an impromptu evening in with friends, the home now features a paneled column refrigerator and freezer, a 48” range and range hood, microwave drawer, beverage center, built-in coffee, and two dishwashers.
“They are perfection! I would be thrilled to have them all in my kitchen, but I have to say the range is definitely my favorite, and the built-in coffee bar is a must,” says Federico. The designer imagines the space for a family and a variety of moments, musing, “This kitchen is meant to be timeless, a truly beautiful and useful gathering place. Perfect for morning coffee and champagne toasts, everyday living and special occasions, and feeling the coastal beauty in every season.”
Moving on from the experience, the designer looks forward to collaborating with JennAir more in 2023. Isn’t that the magic of the Hampton Designer Showhouse? Each year, it connects design professionals and brands to each other, to the Hamptons community, and to a wonderful philanthropic cause.
