A Famous Darien House Designed by Architect Richard Meier Lists for $14.5M

Richard Meier, the 2015 HC&G IDAs Innovator Award recipient, has designed masterpieces all over the world—from the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art to the Getty Center in Los Angeles—and now the rare opportunity to own and live in one of his structures presents itself in Darien, Connecticut.

The circa-1967 house is for sale for the first time in 50 years and is asking a whopping $14.5 million. Dubbed The Smith House after it’s one and only owner, Frederick Smith, the waterfront home offers 3,930-square-feet of living space, four bedrooms, and three bathrooms. Walls of glass allow for stunning views of the Long Island Sound and create the illusion of always being surrounded by nature even while inside. Bedrooms offer more privacy facing the woods and limiting the number of large windows.

Midcentury stunners designed by John Black Lee, thought to be the sixth of the Harvard Five, are currently for sale in New Canaan, but aren’t asking anywhere near this amount.

Jack Trifero of William Pitt and Julia B. Fee Sotheby’s International Realty has the contemporary and historic Darien listing. The broker told Mansion Global, “This is one of the iconic houses of the 20th century, it defined the era for modernism in the 1960s and into the ’70s.”
