An Asheville Estate Puts a Modernized Spin on the Traditional Tudor

Designer Doug Stratton achieved this unique design by incorporating Cultured Stone’s Pro-Fit Alpine Ledgestone throughout the indoor and outdoor living spaces.

A home is a labor of love, and that couldn’t be more true for this impressive estate in Asheville, North Carolina. For over ten years, Doug Stratton waited for the perfect moment to transform the vacant land he purchased into a comfortable and contemporary abode worth envying. Stratton is, after all, the Principal Designer of Stratton Design Group and this project would not only be a gem in the company’s portfolio but would become Stratton’s family home upon completion.

The concept of a Modernized Tudor is a juxtaposition in and of itself, but it gave Stratton the creative freedom to source innovative products that would heighten his vision. When looking for a stone to incorporate in both the interiors and exteriors, Cultured Stone and their distinct offerings proved to be the best fit for this unique build.

“I knew the quality of the Cultured Stone’s product was high, and they had the look that I wanted,” Stratton said regarding his decision to use the company’s product exclusively throughout the estate. Stratton sought a skinny, linear ledgestone for this project and ultimately selected the Pro-Fit Alpine Ledgestone in the Echo Ridge colorway, marrying superior performance with a refined aesthetic. “It is incredibly versatile,” explained Sarah Lograsso, Director of Marketing and Product Design for Cultured Stone, “and it plays well with a wide variety of other materials, such as wood, metal, and glass.”

The facade and exterior layout sets the property apart before one even has the chance to step across the threshold. Ledgestone retaining walls encircle the entrance and outdoor entertaining area. A stately fireplace situated on the covered patio is erected in the same stone, to create a cohesive environment. The exterior design gives visitors a preview of what is to come inside the estate’s walls and makes for a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living.

Stratton’s prior work in Hollywood lighting design and his company’s illustrious portfolio, which includes high-end hotels and luxury spas, rooted the impressive project in a practical nature. “Lighting is our ace in the hole,” said Stratton, who utilized this knowledge to create brilliantly lit focal points throughout the home. Sumptuous lounging alcoves, a pass-through fireplace connecting the foyer to the living room, and two walls framing the windows in the open-concept kitchen and dining rooms are just a few of the many places where Cultured Stone’s Pro-Fit Alpine Ledgestone is featured in the lower-level. “The gorgeous mix of materials and extravagant natural lighting in this cathedral-style space highlights the prevailing vision of this home as a modern twist on historic architecture,” affirmed Lograsso.

Comfortability and functionality are key elements of the home’s interior design. Stratton wanted to avoid the mistake that many modern layouts make, sacrificing spatial function in favor of premium details. To combat this, he built rooms around particular furnishings to maintain each area’s proportions and utilized materials like the Pro-Fit Alpine Ledgestone that was supplied in a panelized format which made for effortless installation.

This ambitious project churned out a strikingly unique build unlike any other in the surrounding Asheville area. “There are a lot of beautiful moments and vignettes throughout the home and we were excited to see so much product incorporated both inside and out!” said Lograsso. This project not only saw Stratton’s singular vision come to fruition but it produced a home with staying power, featuring exceptional and durable materials.
