SPA DREAMS TRANSFORM THIS SPACE INTO A TRANQUIL OASIS
Christopher Pagliaro turned the homeowner’s desire for a Zen-like bathroom into an Asian-inspired reality. A new home allowed the flexibility to accommodate any design imaginable—from dropping floors to increasing structural strength and water capacity. With these adjustments, Pagliaro formed his big idea for this private retreat: creating an indoor waterfall by combining the bathtub and shower into one, open wet area.
The challenge? Most bathtubs are designed to prevent the very overflow Pagliaro desired. The solution? A heated double-infinity concrete bathtub. Pagliaro built a surrounding overflow trough with loose Bali pebbles, designed for water to fill, then spill, onto the shower floor.
A two-tiered seat in the tub invites bathers to sit or recline, while taking in the panoramic view of Long Island Sound. Running water from the shower and tub seems to flow into the peaceful waters outdoors—the key feature in creating a soothing, meditative ambience.
With a modern approach, Pagliaro used materials that summon time-honored traditions. “Zen spas are visually soft, serene and timeless,” he says. “Teak wood, concrete and river stones achieved the organic experience of an Asian bath.” Concrete was integrated throughout the space, from the custom window casings that discreetly house the plumbing to the vanity sink encased in custom teak. Bali pebbles landed a recurring role, appearing in the walls and floor in keeping with the Asian-influenced motif.

CLASSIC GREEK KEY INSPIRES AN ELEGANT DESIGN
The homeowner’s affinity for Greek key sparked the theme of this Greenwich master bathroom. What started as inspiration, spread like wildfire throughout the space, beginning with interior designer Cindy Rinfret’s favorite element: Greek key in a custom water-jet marble inlay border on the floor to create the illusion of a rug.
From there, the pattern further extends to the cornice above the tub—made from silver leaf and an antique mirror. And when the homeowner wanted her traditional wing chairs added to the space, Greek key fabric came to the rescue. Rinfret created a refreshing, new sitting area to take in the peaceful environment.
This classic bathroom is tempered with modern touches in every corner: A translucent shade offers privacy, while a free-standing crystal sink pairs beautifully with a custom vanity embellished with mirrors. Rinfret also designed the vanities and bathtub surround with a decorative, diamond-shaped border detail.

A COTTAGE-STYLE MASTER BATHroom GETS A FRESH FACE
With a charming beach bungalow in mind, Susan Alisberg put a contemporary twist on the master bathroom in this Old Greenwich shingle-style home. “As with any renovation,” she says, “we try to respect the integrity of the old while creating modern spaces.”
The same goes for this project. The integration of old and new is apparent in the details: Polished chrome, Victorian fittings garnish an antique-style Piedmont tub. The crisp, clean color palette enhances the cottage tradition, while an elegant hanging globe pendant adds an updated element. Even the larger-scale hexagonal mosaic tiles offer a new look, while giving a nod to the era when the house was originally built.
Alisberg used a casement window to draw natural light into the shower. Wide-plank shiplap boards visually open up the room and give it drama. To contrast with the ceiling, Alisberg chose to paint the wainscot a chocolate brown for a richly colored accent wall—her favorite element in this welcoming bathroom.
