Bill and Melinda Gates Drop $43M on Oceanfront Home in Del Mar

Recently Melinda and Bill Gates have been in the news for pledging $100 million to help in the fight against COVID-19, but with a net worth Bloomberg Billionaires Index estimates to be $106 billion, it seems there’s always room for a personal splurge. In this case, it’s this lavish oceanfront Del Mar home. Purchased under the name “Oceanside Del Mar Trust,” the couple’s real estate move didn’t go unnoticed and the Wall Street Journal reports that they are indeed the buyers. The sale even broke the record for the most expensive residential home sold in San Diego county, costing the billionaires $43 million.

Maybe it was the home’s 120-feet of ocean frontage or its captivating architecture that attracted the high-profile spenders. Designed by world-renowned architect Ken Ronchetti, the abode is a stunning sight with huge glass walls that open completely to the expansive patio for luxurious indoor/outdoor living. A dream for entertaining, the outdoor space holds lounge areas, a pool, spa, and fire pit where waves crashing is the constant soundtrack.

Inside, the design instantly brings to mind luxurious, coastal vibes. High vaulted ceilings and a neutral color palette create a feeling of airiness throughout. The resort-like residence holds 6 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, including a guesthouse across the street so the Gateses visitors will have ample privacy.

According to the WSJ, the former wife of the late billionaire T. Boone Pickens, Madeline Pickens, was the seller. Brian Guiltinan of The Guiltinan Group held the listing and Bruce V. Howard of Krone & Bushard represented the buyers.
