Design House in Southampton debuts its very own fabric line
Southampton’s Design House has long been a go-to source for high-end decoration, fabrics and accessories. Starting this month, customers can shop the store’s first-ever in-house fabric line, DH Textiles, created by owners Maria Greenlaw and Suzanne Caldwell. The brand-new designs, explains Greenlaw, stem from “a hunger for creativity and a need to express our aesthetic as another personalized layer in our interiors.” Research for the line began last spring: The women turned to diverse influences such as Sanssouci and Malmaison, Navajo patterns and French gypsy culture for inspiration, while simultaneously learning the various techniques involved in fabric production. Swatches of patterns and hundreds of sketches eventually evolved into a variety of hand-block-printed fabrics with a “unique quality to them: earthy, organic and historic-feeling, all at the same time,” says Caldwell. The collection, the women add, represents “the state of babakul,” which the dynamic, adventuresome pair fittingly translate as a “modern gypsy spirit.”
