California’s First-Ever Zero Carbon Home Lists in Malibu with $32M Price Tag

Living at this mansion must look and feel good. Why? Because it’s California’s first-ever zero carbon home, known in the MariSol Malibu Zero Series as Zero 1. From this sustainable stunner, one can look out to the Pacific Ocean and Santa Monica mountains, enjoying the views with the knowledge that the house is certified by the International Living Future Institute. It costs some serious green to live green here, though, and the luxurious abode is listed for $32 million.

Zero Series is being brought to life by a team of experts and this is the first of four homes in the works, all set to be complete by 2025. Crown Pointe Estates is the developer and Burdge Architects has conceived the architecture, but equally important is the energy design, done by Beyond Efficiency, and the energy and carbon planning, executed by STOK. All have been designed to meet the exacting standards of the Paris Agreement and Kigali Accord.

Zero 1 is a six-bedroom, nine-bathroom masterpiece that is 100% electric and uses 100% renewable energy. According to the MariSol Malibu website, 28% of global CO2 emissions come from the operations of buildings, so this was a pivotal part of achieving zero carbon ready status. The electric grid in Ventura country, Tesla batteries, and solar panels are all to thank.

As for the materials, the design employs wood as much as possible, with 30% of the lumber locally sourced. In addition, the roof is made of 99% recycled aluminum from the United States. The two-acre grounds were not forgotten either and Crown Pointe Estates spent $2 million landscaping them with 317 mature trees.

The Malibu property also has an organic fruit orchard, vegetable and herb garden, and two Italian beehives for honey harvesting. A beekeeper and regenerative farmer will be at the owner’s beck and call for two years as well.

As would be expected at any $32 million home, the amenities also don’t leave you wanting. A home theater, fitness center, saltwater pool, basketball court, putting green, and driving range all await. Oh, and 467 feet of ocean frontage. After all, it is Malibu.
