Designer Jolie Korek Creates a Nature-Inspired Modern in Bridgehampton
With free reign and creative collaboration, Korek gave her dream client a dream home.
“Free reign” and “creative freedom” are words that are music to most designers’ ears. And when Jolie Korek, principal of Jolie Korek & Company, was brought in to help create a longtime client’s Bridgehampton home from scratch, that is exactly what she was told. Working with local architect Dan Michels, the Hamptons interior designer let her creativity flow.
The unique site, a beautiful protected land area butting up against a nature preserve, determined much of the design concept. Korek and Michels wanted it to feel as though you’re outside when inside and inside when you’re outside. Having doors open almost completely to the outside was a must, with a motorized screen installed to protect the sleek spaces from mosquitos and bugs. Skylights also allow endless sunshine to stream in and they embraced nature down to the last detail, even using recycled antique flooring, wallboards, and beams so the home feels organic and earthy.
“I think of myself as a modern naturalist,” says Jolie Korek, who is tapped for many large, high-end projects in the Hamptons. “Balancing modern design with an organic touch, I create innovative spaces and make them feel comfortable and warm with textural finishes and soothing hues.”
The interior designer studied sunsets every night during this project, paying close attention to how nature’s palette unfolds. If you look closely, a delicate balance of colors that could only be inspired by Mother Nature exists throughout. While Korek rarely gravitates toward bold hues, the bright blue light fixture felt like a natural fit for the foyer. The designer shares, “I want people to walk in this home and feel all their senses are alive and curious.”
The custom kitchen is more than just a treat for the taste buds. Known for her kitchen designs, Korek may have even outdone herself with this modern space. Viewing cabinets as furniture with the power to change a space, she took extra time to make daring choices like adding a walnut frame around the drawers. Using cerused wood from John Carlucci Woodworking, Korek also went with two stains to bring out the grain in the wood.
The homeowner was a dream client and was given a dream Hamptons home. Every inch of the modern beauty was carefully and creatively designed. To spend summer days on the screened-in porch with its beautiful mosaic floor or entertaining on the picturesque deck looking out to the nature preserve, what could be better?
Like any design industry leader, a big part of the fun and success of Korek’s projects comes from the team she entrusts. Lisa Meskin, Korek’s design associate, helped to execute and expedite design solutions for this amazing project. Decorative painter Fabricio Fabri added one-of-a-kind touches to the rooms, while Mike Chiarello of Mac MetalWorks created the exceptional staircase.
