In spring 2022, just months before the highly-anticipated release of his film Elvis, director Baz Luhrmann placed his bold New York City townhouse on the market. Full of saturated hues, bold contrast, and graphic patterns, the 19th-century home showcased expressive interiors right in tune with the Australian seller’s style of films. His work includes The Great Gatsby and Romeo + Juliet, both starring Leonardo Di Caprio and captivating viewers with their lavish costumes and sets. Of course, Moulin Rouge is another acclaimed movie Luhrmann directed that’s anything but subtle.
However, not everyone may feel at home in a world of fantastical design. Luhrmann originally hoped to get $20 million for his exuberant Gramercy townhouse, but didn’t have luck securing a buyer. When a $1 million price cut didn’t move the needle, it seems simplifying the five-story residence’s look was the next step.
Now exuding more of a fresh, neutral feel that will appeal to a wider audience, the 8,500-square-foot home has hit the market again asking $15.995 million. Built in the 1850s and meticulously maintained, the Anglo-Italianate property’s period details, five fireplaces, intricate woodwork, and high ceilings remain unchanged. Some of Luhrmann’s design choices have gone untouched as well, including a tropical wallpaper in one of the home’s six bedrooms. More of the seller’s upgrades from a 2019 renovation—including a new roof, drainage, down piping, and exterior decking—also present buyers with much value.
