Fall Into Bed with Fig Linens and Home: Laura Michaels of Laura Michaels Design Creates a Sophisticated Bedding Ensemble
Having launched her design career in fashion, Laura Michaels of Laura Michaels Design has a natural love of layers.
"I am a very tactile designer. I like layers of textures vs layers of patterns," she explains. "My style tends to go from trendy to transitional, although I am passionate about all good design."
When asked to create a bedding ensemble using pieces from her favorite collections carried by Fig Linens and Home in Westport, CT, Laura worked closely with Fig's Carlin Van Noppen to design a bespoke headboard using a silk fabric that Carlin customizes for each client.
"I walked into Fig and immediately saw the collection I wanted to use—beautiful silk bedding with a delicate pintuck and in a shade of Oyster," Laura recalls. "It is so luxurious and elegant but with a textural touch."
"With this in mind, I decided to design a custom headboard in the same Oyster-colored silk fabric and add two lucite side tables. It just came to me, which is so frequently how I design," continues Laura. "I see the space and know instinctively what would look best."
Laura's instincts were correct. The tactile nature of the headboard complements the mostly monochromatic color palette Laura selected for the bedding itself.
In addition to three Euro shams covered in the Fig's custom silk fabric, Laura paired three 22-inch Iced Mink Faux Fur Pillows by Fabulous Furs with dual 16-inch Tibetan Throw Pillows by Auskin. A blush-colored throw pillow in Fig's custom fabric topped the plush pile.
"I do love a romantic bedroom," Laura confesses. "Bedrooms are private spaces and should always be luxurious, comfortable and even a little precious. I am far less cognizant of durability when it comes to the bedroom, as I find people favor that which they can never have in other rooms of the house–all white!
