Fine Al Fresco Finds from Seven Darien Shops

That time of year is finally here—that time when every woman in Fairfield County has burned her tights, buried her snow boots and broken out the sandals. Life’s soundtrack now includes the melodies of chirping birds and roaring lawnmowers. And the best part of it all? Warm-weather shopping! New Englanders only get a brief, fleeting window to enjoy life outdoors so we have to stock up the best accessories for plein air enjoyment. I headed to the sweet enclave of shops in Darien to check off my list.

Indigo rugs and Moroccan themed throw pillows garden seat

First, at Good Goods, refresh your patio with outdoor rugs from Dash & Albert in sweet shades of indigo. Finish with Moroccan-themed throw pillows and a chic garden seat. Rugs, $40, Silsila pillow, $110, Blue garden seat, $225, 859 Boston Post Rd., 203-655-8100.

French Bistro Chairs and table set, Poseidon paper placemats

Classic French bistro chairs are an outdoor staple, and Parisian emporium Couleur Provence has an ample selection of them, all for under $300. 863 Boston Post Rd., 203-655-9775.

At Browne & Co., I found an adorable pad of paper placemats from Two’s Company, perfect for hosting an impromptu barbeque or crab feast. With party planning beginning to swirl in my head, I popped into the back café area for a coffee. Poseidon paper placemat, $22, 865 Boston Post Rd., 203-656-1920.

Anchor bottle opener and nautical serving board and platter
Strippled nautical Cabana seat pillow

Speaking of parties, I also like to stock up on hostess gifts, and Kirby & Company has a treasure trove of them. I love this gold anchor bottle opener or a nautical serving board and spreader set. Pro tip: Don’t leave without grabbing a French macaron (or several) from the K. & Co. Confections Café. Bottle opener, $20, oak serving board with spreader, $28, 1029 Post Rd., 203-309-5900.

Just down the road, walking into Folly Design Elements is like stepping foot into a botanical garden, complete with the scent of greenery and the sounds of running water. Big-ticket items, like this stone fountain, are accompanied by fun accessories, like a pillow that points to the beach or cabana. Cabana pillow, $32, Terrace fountain, $495, 1082 Post Rd., 203-424-1070.

Beach cover up and pastel colored turkish towels

Conveniently located near the train station, Town House is brand new to the area—I walked in just as the owners were popping the bubbly for their grand opening. Adorable home accessories are accompanied by fashion necessities. Colorful Turkish towels and beach cover-ups are a must for an afternoon by the pool. Atolya bleached cotton towel, $38, Atolya cap sleeve Turkish tunic, $84, 37 Tokeneke Rd., 203-309-5012.

Frances Ashforth, Monotype painting

A quick jaunt down the road, I finished my day at Denmede. Whether your home is on the coast or in the forest, a beach vibe is necessary for summer. This Frances Ashforth Monotype is on my wishlist. “Beach Study,” $1,300, 697 Boston Post Rd., 203-655-7355.

The final ingredient to a spring afternoon shopping is a cocktail outdoors. If you like it hot (as in spicy), the Tomalito margarita from Bodega is a must, and The Melting Pot’s Deep South Tea sings summer. Or if you prefer a drink of the caffeinated variety, Neat’s craft coffee hits the spot.
