Frank Lloyd Wright’s New Canaan Creation ‘Tirranna’ Sells for $6M

When thinking of New Canaan real estate, it might be the quintessential Connecticut Colonials that come to mind. However, the quaint town is no stranger to midcentury modern masterpieces—such as those crafted by the Harvard Five. But, an especially rare treasure is “Tirranna House,” a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home. It listed last spring for $8 million and just sold for $6 million.

While the late and great architect’s creations garner attention on the market, whether in Chicago, Oklahoma, or California, this one has some special allure. Frank Lloyd Wright was working on it at the same time his brainchild the Guggenheim Museum in NYC was being built.

One of his more expansive residential projects, the home spans 7,861 square feet and sits on 14 acres of protected land. The horseshoe-shaped home consists of a myriad of natural materials, including mahogany and concrete. Fairfield-based Vicent Benic Architect restored the home in 1999, according to the New Canaan Advertiser. The landscape design, which includes a swimming pool and tennis court, was the vision of Frank Okamura.

“It was a rare honor to represent Tirranna, a true gem of mid-century architectural history that will continue to provide a Zen-like experience blending nature and comfort to its latest inhabitants,” commented listing agents Albert Safdie and Marsha Charles of Coldwell Banker Realty. Chau Ngo of the Jennifer Leahy Team at Douglas Elliman represented the anonymous buyer.

Other properties in the tri-state area featuring the iconic architect’s work include a residence on a New York private island and a Hudson Valley stunner.
