Tell us more about Third Street South.
Third Street South – the birthplace and the heart of Old Naples, Florida – is a destination in the tradition of Worth Avenue, Job’s Lane, and other special restaurant and shopping neighborhoods in the resort towns of the American East Coast.
In the center of the Gold Coast, nestled between the Gulf of Mexico and the Bay of Naples, it’s a paradise of award-winning restaurants and chic, carefully curated shops, set amidst lush landscaping full of colorful plants and flowers, handsome courtyards, and plazas burbling with 19th-century fountains.
What are some fun things to do for first-time visitors?
Choose among seven top-flight restaurants, each with its own style, food, and entertainment, but all recognized for their superb fare and flawless service. Sophisticated shops offer the best designer clothes for both women and men, from the most casual to the dressiest for evening. Or choose exquisite jewelry, delightful children’s clothes, glamorous bathing suits, or stylish sportswear.
Find bed and table linens, interior accessories, fine china and glassware, carefully selected antiques, and unique gifts from the amusing to the spectacular. Stop for coffee and pastries or to taste the perfect wine. Or just relax on the comfortable seating that’s everywhere and rest, think, people-watch. Bring your dog.
What are some of the must-go-to shops for high-end shopping?
Marissa is a store known nationally for its boutique designers, superb shoe collection, and irresistible accessories – including a broad choice of creatively designed pieces from the best jewelers. John Craig, cited by Esquire as one of the country’s best men’s shops, specializes in bespoke suits, offerings from Peter Millar and other fine labels, and shoes and accessories to delight any gentleman.
For over three-quarters of a century, Gattles has supplied the finest linen brands, including Porthault, as well as tabletop and bath accessories. A Mano delights with the best porcelain (including three exclusive French lines available nowhere else in America), as well as crystal, glassware, gift of many kinds, and women’s jewelry, casual clothes and accessories. Gretchen Scott has her own eponymous designs for women, with interesting antiques and surprises sprinkled throughout the store, while Sara Campbell’s clothes flatter and enhance.
The iconic Eileen Fisher, J. McLaughlin, Leggiadro, Lily Pulitzer, Tommy Bahama, Relax, and Sequin all present their beloved clothes. And for another kind of shopping, don’t miss the popular and nationally ranked Third Street Farmer’s Market, selling fresh local produce, gourmet fish and shellfish, an array of international prepared foods, and handcrafted gifts. Held every Saturday, and dog-friendly, it is joyful for all.
When is the best time of year to visit?
From Christmas until after Easter is the high season and most exciting time, but the shoulder periods beginning in October and stretching from after Easter until the end of June are very pleasant, and popular with many because they’re less crowded and people can be more relaxed – though the restaurants and shops stay busy.
What is one of your favorite off-the-beaten path adventures to check out?
Apart from the pleasures of the beach, the golf courses (if you play), and the endless opportunities for boating, fishing, surfing, and other such pleasures, we recommend a trip to the Everglades National Park, which begins nearby, where you’ll see unusual natural beauty, exotic plants and birds (and maybe animals) and come to understand the importance of this one-of-a-kind ecosystem so important to all of us everywhere. Less far afield is the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, which highlights the bird and animal life of the area, and reveals how to preserve and enhance it.
Anything else to add?
Third Street South is unique in that much of it has been in the hands of the same family for over 75 years. As a result, high standards in every aspect of the street and its surroundings have been maintained, and will continue to be.
