Harbormaster Robert Bori Talks Hampton Yachting

HC&G: How long have you been Sag Harbor’s harbormaster?
Robert Bori: Ten years. I started after retiring from the Southampton Police Department.

What are your duties?
I manage 100 moorings, which are fixed anchorages away from land; 142 seasonal and transient Town-owned slips, which are attached to the docks; and 100 dinghy slips. I also manage the superyachts [vessels measuring more than 100 feet] that are anchored in the bay. Additionally, I oversee nine dockhands and two assistant harbormasters.

Is there a waiting list for seasonal docks and moorings?
Currently we are able to accommodate most Sag Harbor residents, who have priority access. Nonresidents normally wait two to three years for a spot.

How much does it cost?
It varies, depending on the type and terms of docking. Superyachts pay dockage fees of $7 per linear foot per day. What’s the largest yacht Sag Harbor can accommodate? For a slip, it’s 180 feet. There’s no limit for anchorages.

How long do superyachts usually stay in Sag Harbor?
Sag Harbor is on the Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Newport, and Maine cruising circuit, and the boats typically stop for a total of two or three weeks on their way up and down the coast.
