HC&G Presents: The Hampton Designer Showhouse 2021

Top designers transform the historic Wooley House into a decorating masterpiece.

THE HAMPTON DESIGNER SHOWHOUSE 2021

Presented by HC&G, the 2021 Hampton Designer Showhouse has officially opened its doors. In this year’s installment, 24 design firms converged on a newly renovated 7,000-square-foot historic home in Southampton Village to raise funds for the Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.

Originally part of the Wooley Estate in the 1830s, the Hampton Designer Showhouse was beautifully renovated and reimagined as well as graciously donated by homeowners Jason Khan and Juan Londono. While adhering to the strict historic facade guidelines, the renovation of the Wooley House includes over 7,000 square feet expanding on 3 levels with over 23 modern interior spaces. It also features the original front porch complete with Italianate brackets and swan spirals. Scroll down to learn more about each design.

Over the course of nearly 2 decades, The Hampton Designer Showhouse has raised nearly $2M for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. To witness incredible design in a magical location for a great cause, the Hampton Designer Showhouse is open for viewing until October 31, Monday through Sunday, 11:00am – 5:00pm.

Inspired by the original 1835 farmhouse’s wood beams, designer Denise Rinfret aimed to “retain the quiet, timeless flavor of its country simplicity.”

Antique painted furniture and neoclassical mirrors complement an oversize Vaughan Designs lantern, and a striped RH wing chair is “reminiscent of slipcovers that everyone used to do back in the day. I’ve spent every summer in the Hamptons with my children. The place is dear to us.”

“Traditional meets dramatic” in the primary bath, according to Zandy Gammons, who partnered with co-designer Liles Dunnigan to give this space a “bold and unexpected” aura. Among the punctuation marks: a Brunschwig & Fils wall covering from Kravet below the tray ceiling, roman shades by Bassett McNab, a chair from Ngala Trading, and a vintage Turkish rug from Nashville Rug Gallery.

Designer Libby Langdon opted for a “fresh and fun, happy Hamptons home” theme, using the koi fish motif from her new collection of wall decor for Paragon as a springboard. A wall covering from Phillip Jeffries and a dragon-print cushion fabric from Thibaut provide “the perfect combination of bright coral and multiple blues,” while a chandelier from Crystorama and a rug from Langdon’s collection with KAS tie the space together.

Designers Barbara Page Glatt and Bimla Picot partnered with OKA to create a casually elegant, multifunctional space, balancing a console table underneath a wicker mirror from OKA, and Thibaut’s Pima Braid jute wall covering, plus vibrant accessories that “make the room buzz,” Glatt says. Vaughan Designs lamps and ceiling light cast a warm light throughout.

“You wouldn’t expect a wild garden on your balcony,” florist Arthur Golabek declares about his “rustic and relaxed” botanical design, which centers on a mix of faux and natural plants among Japanese ceramic dinnerware and antique furnishings. “The wildflowers of Poland, where I grew up, inspired the floral arrangements, as did the fields near my studio and home in Sag Harbor.”

Breakfast Room

The natural beauty of the Hamptons inspired Kate Singer to choose a watery blue rug by Stark, a driftwood-like dining table by Keith Fritz, and rattan chairs. Above the table hangs a modernist style lighting fixture from Vaughan Designs. Layered textiles in her “organic, summery” breakfast room include an aquatic pattern by Peter Fasano, which frames the French doors. “Along with the creative aspect,” Singer says, “the showhouse gives me the opportunity to join my colleagues in support of a worthy cause.” The room is painted in Glimmer by Sherwin Williams.

“An all-white traditional kitchen is always in style,” says designer Gary Ciuffo, who kitted out this space with JennAir appliances and custom panels, Silestone countertops from Cosentino, and a backsplash from The Tile Shop. “Integrated with the family room, and also including a coffee bar and wine fridge, it’s everything in one.”

To bring this “garden oasis” to life, designer Jim Dove hung a de Gournay wallpaper replete with floral and bird motifs. A Venetian-glass chandelier with yellow and gold crystals from Luxe Cable + Light plays against the paper’s robin’s-egg blue, blush pink, and citron hues, while sparkling new fittings from Kohler underscore “the contrast between modern and traditional elements,” Dove says.

Jab Anstoetz’s aqua upholstery fabric Malibu Beach was the inspiration behind Courtney Sempliner’s “retro and seaside–inspired” outdoor living room. “The uniqueness of this space lies in the creative play between pattern and pops of color,” Sempliner says. “It’s a nod to the Hamptons lifestyle.”

Designer Kerri Pilchik aimed for a “boutique bed and breakfast” look, positioning a sweet bistro table in the corner of the room alongside a Highland House bed with a sumptuous covering from Quadrille.

The color blue makes a lovely appearance in a Vaughan Designs chandelier above the bed.

A wall covering from Schumacher in the bedroom and one from Abnormals Anonymous in the adjacent bath adds further cohesiveness to her decorating scheme. Especially with the flower arrangements from Mary Stuart Flowers.

The father-and-daughter team of Brian and Alexandra Brady channeled their “wanderlust and love for the Amalfi Coast” in the primary bedroom, which features a bed covering from Sferra, a Vaughan Designs light fixture, and drapery fabric from Kravet.

Sherwin Williams’s Naples Yellow on the walls and chairs from the Brady Design Collection, covered in a light blue Thibaut fabric, make the room a veritable oasis. The detailed carpet from Stark available at The Carpetman by Stark is simply the cherry on top.

Sea Green Designs

Bedroom and Bath

When devising her scheme for this bedroom, Shannon Willey of Sea Green Designs was inspired by “coastal farmhouses,” employing a custom shutter over the roof window and a decorative wall finish from Chandler Decorative Arts. In the adjacent bath, a Hartmann & Forbes wall covering and Kohler fixtures throughout further amplifies the theme.

Lucy Cuneo

To give her “fun and flirty” powder room a “cozy, sophisticated atmosphere,” Lucy Cuneo aimed for a British-inflected ambiance, anchoring her “cheeky” seashell motif with a wallpaper by Veere Grenney for Schumacher. Linens are through Sferra and the vanity from Robern.

Scott Formby Design

Second-Floor Study and Bath

To convert a small bedroom into a study, Scott Formby turned to the worlds of art and fashion, creating a space with “nods to literature, privacy, and solitude.” Vintage Hermès sketchbooks, bouclé curtains, various tweeds, bold lighting and mirrors from Vaughan Designs, and a shiny mirrored bookshelf through OKA suggest “masculine and feminine elements playing against each other.” A Stark rug available at The Carpetman by Stark adds a wonderful texture and coziness to the space.

In the bathroom, Pierre Frey’s Atelier Jean wallpaper adds a unique flair alongside the Vaughan Designs and Kohler fixtures.

Amy Heywood Art

Gallery

The bright and cheery gallery on the lower level features a mix of oil paintings and encaustics by artist Amy Heywood, who set out to turn “this transitional place into a space where people will want to stay and linger. I use lots of bright, intense colors in my work, and I’ve grouped pieces strategically for a seamless flow.”

The neutral Jan-Kath runner and white Sherwin William’s paint allow Amy’s incredible pieces to carry the weight of the room. Wyvern Wall sculptures from Vaughan Designs and an OKA console provide additional details to admire.

“I wanted to do something retro and futuristic,” says designer Thomas Mastrianni, who displayed multiple artworks of his own, as well as pieces by the artist Donnovan, in his steampunk-inspired theater, which also features a carpet from Stark, audioControl amplifiers, Control4 automation, and oversize leopard-print beanbags for lounging.

Inspired by an imaginary “sailor who travels the world,” Andrew Bowen of Ash Staging kitted out this bedroom with a rope-edged cocktail table, a hand-painted side table shaped like an elephant, and a custom chair, all of which suggest both “summer and a seafaring culture.” Upscale products from Kohler elevate the bathroom design against the beautiful paint from Sherwin Williams.

Set against a graphic Pierre Frey wall covering, “approachable and fun” pieces from Design Within Reach give designer Michel Smith Boyd’s great room both a contemporary and mid-20th-century vibe, while a Serge Mouille chandelier and shimmery green palette infuse it with “under the sea” panache.

A chinoiserie fabric panel with “great energy and an old-world, yet modern look” was the ideal choice to anchor Jennifer Pacca’s porch design, which includes a love seat and lounge chairs from Design Within Reach, side tables from Emissary, draperies from Fairfield, lanterns from Bevolo, and rugs from Jaipur.

“After what we’ve all gone through in these past couple of years, I want to smile,” says decorator and Hampton Designer Showhouse co-chair Alexa Hampton. “I like to play.” Accordingly, she decked out the pool area with lots of color via chaise longues, umbrellas, tables, and chairs for Woodard. East End Landscaping grounded the outdoor space with their landscape design.

Designer Melanie Roy partnered with Todd Merrill Studio to create the “ultimate low-key luxe hangout space, with a focus on high craft and high glam.” Case in point: A fireplace surround of patinated steel with gold etching, made by artisan Stefan Rurak and “inspired by Abstract Expressionist paintings.” The sofa, also from Todd Merrill Studios, is covered in a teal velvet from Romo.

Designer Avery Frank envisioned a “mid-20th-century-style dining room with a beachy touch to it.” A chandelier, mirror, and sideboard lamps from High Style Deco, a wall covering from Thibaut, and beach-scene paintings by Michael Patterson make the space “light and airy,” while the dining table from Mr. Brown London lends a further modern appeal.

Firm designers Madeline Kavanaugh, Erika Maroney, and Kate Wozniak’s inspiration for this space “all started with a swing,” Maroney reports. “We wanted the porch to be an escape, so that you’d feel like you’re on vacation in the West Indies.” In addition to the custom swing, which is covered in fabrics from Schumacher and Kravet and a trim from Samuel & Sons, handmade planters from Spain add to the “warm and tranquil environment.”
