JFK Airport To Receive a $13 Billion Renovation
If you thought the $8 billion LaGuardia Airport revamp was a pain for getting to your flight, wait until you hear about the recently announced $13 billion renovation that will start at John F. Kennedy International Airport in 2020. Unfortunately, the two projects will overlap since construction at LaGuardia is set to wrap up in 2021, meaning that the traffic nightmare is nowhere near over. The light at the end of the tunnel is that New York will soon have two fully updated, stylish and functional airports.
Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that four million square feet will be added to the JFK Airport in the form of two new international terminals. With these structures in place, the airport’s capacity will increase by “at least 15 million passengers a year,” according to the statement Cuomo released.
The governor asserts, “While leaders in Washington talk about investing in infrastructure, we're actually doing it at historic levels and the transformation of JFK Airport into a 21st century transportation hub will ensure New York remains the nation's front door to the world.” Plus to ease taxpayers’ minds, it is promised that 90% of the $13 billion will be funded by private investments.
Along with expansion, design is also a top priority. Passenger facilities will offer larger waiting areas with high ceilings, ample natural light, and a modern look. Interior green space meant to represent Central Park and other exhibits featuring iconic New York landmarks will occupy these open areas, so even a traveler stopping for a layover can enjoy the Big Apple. To take passengers' taste buds on a trip from the comfort of the airport, the food court will be modeled after Chelsea Market.
Construction will begin in 2020, with the first new gates estimated to open in 2023. According to 6sqft, the plans will be sent to the Port Authority’s Board of Commissioners and move forward from there. If everything stays on schedule, the entire project should be finished by 2025.
