L.A.’s Iconic and Distinct ‘Garcia House’ Designed by John Lautner Lists for $16M

Sitting on Los Angeles’ coveted Mulholland Drive, which frames picturesque views of the Santa Monica Mountains, glamorous and creative ‘Garcia House’ just hit the market. The one-of-a-kind architectural marvel, designed by world-renowned architect John Lautner in 1962 and restored meticulously by Marmol Radziner, is asking $16 million.

Reminiscent of architecture in The Incredibles or Despicable Me, the modern’s shape and build are captivating. It’s perched 60 feet above the ground on steel caissons, giving the illusion of a floating spaceship of sorts. Once inside, walls of glass provide panoramic canyon views. The heart of the home, a sunken living area fosters a delightfully retro feel true to its 1960s roots.

Holding a total of three bedrooms and three bathrooms, a stay here promises an immersive and intimate experience with architecture and the site’s dramatic scenery. Natural stone and wood elements line the interior of the 2,596-square-foot gem, always bringing the outside in in classic California custom.

Garcia House is owned by producer Bill Damaschke, best known for animation projects like Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda, and business manager John McIlwee. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the couple purchased and refurbished the Gerald and Betty Ford property in Rancho Mirage as well as this iconic residence.

Beyond restoring the structure itself, McIlwee and Damaschke tapped landscape artist John Sharp to refresh Garcia House’s grounds. From every angle, the home is enveloped in flourishing greenery. Plus, a downhill trek leads to a magical poolside area on the cliffside.

“This is an unparalleled opportunity for art collectors and connoisseurs to own a truly unique and exceptional piece of architecture,” says listing agent Weston Littlefield. “This is a rare chance to own one of the city’s most historic and renowned homes, and it is sure to be a treasure that will be cherished for generations to come.”
