Legendary Composer Richard Rodgers' Country Home in Fairfield Lists for $3.395M

The property features a swank pool terrace.Dorothy Rodgers, wife of composer Richard Rodgers, wrote an entire book about the modern home—their country retreat—they commissioned architect John Stonehilll to build for them, beginning in 1965. Titled The House in My Head, the process kicks off with a photo of Mrs. Rodgers in white gloves and a head wrap, peering into the hole dug for the foundation, with the book’s final chapter comprised of recipes for such fancy dishes as Boeuf a la Mode with Aspic and something called Alligator Pear Salad (no finger bowls needed, she promises!). In between, we get a stone-by-stone accounting of what became a glorious, open-plan home with loads of glass walls and a swank pool terrace, all designed for entertaining guests. Now-commonplace innovations include en-suite bedrooms (six bedrooms in total) and an expansive great room with soaring ceilings and a fireplace. The property is now for sale, nicely restored after all these years, and including nine private acres adjacent to Connecticut Audubon Society land. The Fairfield home lists for $3,595,000 with Barbara Vinograd of Coldwell Banker.
