Look Inside the Most Expensive Listing Brooklyn Has Ever Seen

The 17,000-square-foot mansion at 3 Pierrepont Place is the most expensive listing Brooklyn has ever seen at $40 million.Brooklyn has been no stranger to multimillion-dollar sales prices of late, but at $40 million, this 17,350-square-foot, 15-bedroom, 16-bath residence in Brooklyn Heights—designed in 1857 by architect Frederick A. Peterson and known as the Low Mansion—is the most expensive listing the borough has ever seen. The house, which can be converted from its current eight-apartment configuration back into a single-family residence, is surrounded by 9,000 square feet of terraces and gardens and served as a filming location for the 1985 mafia flick Prizzi’s Honor. Additionally, there are nine fireplaces, a grand central staircase, and a roof deck with a view of the harbor. The mansion was originally built for Abiel Abbot Low, a tea and silk merchant who operated a fleet of clipper ships, and whose son, Seth Low, was a two-term mayor of Brooklyn, then the president of Columbia University, and later the mayor of New York City, all between the years 1881 and 1903. “The house harks back to the time when Brooklyn Heights was where the aristocracy wanted to be,” says Paula Del Nunzio of Brown Harris Stevens, who is sharing the listing with Vicki Negron of Corcoran Group Real Estate.
