1/11Photograph by Matthew WilliamsInstead of crawl spaces and flood vents, a concrete slab on grade was used to meet FEMA requirements for this home on a waterfront site in Westport. A majority of interior materials are flood proof: polished concrete slab floors, fiberglass frame doors and trim, mold resistant drywall, glass, steel and stone wall finishes. Exterior construction includes a super-insulated wood and steel frame, acrylic stucco on continuous insulation, triple pane, high R value fiberglass glazing system, concrete, zinc and limestone finishes and a low-slope “cool roof” of white reflective material. 3/11Photograph by Alan KunPerched atop a hill in Riverside, this home’s exterior is comprised of natural cedar siding treated with a new nanotechnology coating to preserve the natural finish. Triple-glazed doors and windows were shipped from Ireland. Upper deck railing was constructed of cedar slats that were milled on site. The interior open L-shaped plan allows vistas across the entire house. A massive (four-by-eight-two-foot) front door opens onto a custom fountain in the sunken entry courtyard.Photograph by Alan KunPerched atop a hill in Riverside, this home’s exterior is comprised of natural cedar siding treated with a new nanotechnology coating to preserve the natural finish. There’s a beautifully detailed library and an elegant front-to-back hall. The three-story atrium provides circulation to all floors while delivering natural light to the center of the residence through a series of clerestory windows including an elliptical cupola. A rooftop deck has panoramic views of the shoreline.Photograph by Jim FioraTim Gilson built this Old Greenwich shingle-style home. 5/11Photograph by Steve RossiOn a narrow bluff in Rowayton, a T-shaped plan (garage and studio in front) created an entry courtyard and allowed the architects to push the full width and body of the house as close to the water as possible. Designed one-room deep, it capitalizes on views with frameless structural glass and folding doors. Douglas fir ceilings and beams complete the serene scene. Interiors are by Amy Hirsch.
