Old Hollywood Star Greta Garbo’s Former Beverly Hills Home Hits the Market

Prior to WWII, Greta Garbo was one of the biggest names in Hollywood through her work in films like Mata Hari, Anna Karenina, and Camille. Today, she’s seen as one of the greatest screen actresses of all time. The Swedish-born star had homes on both coasts of the US, with her former NYC apartment of 40 years listing last month for $7.25 million. Coincidentally, her former Beverly Hills home is now on the market as well asking $12 million.

Built for the iconic star in 1937, the decaying property was turned from drab to fab by celebrity designer Nicole Sassaman in 2006. Most notably, the home grew bigger. “The additional space was attained by erecting a second story and pushing the home out toward the view,” Sassaman said in an Elle Decor article regarding the renovation. “The hilltop view was stunning but the estate didn’t take advantage of it because the house had been built to keep the inhabitants in and the press out,” likely to suit Garbo’s private and reclusive lifestyle.

Now clocking in at 4,675 square feet, the six-bedroom home’s remodel introduced beautiful wood floors as well as dark-toned doorways, archways, and built-ins. The main floor caters to those who enjoy hosting, featuring an open-concept floor plan and beautiful views as far as the eye can see. Perhaps the new buyers will have more guests and parties than the starlet did.

The fun doesn’t stop inside, however, as a luxurious infinity pool gives the illusion that the house is perched atop water, while numerous outdoor terraces and backyard space bask in complete privacy.

A clue into Garbo’s mysterious life off-camera, Mark Mintz of Compass holds the listing. A Russian filmmaker is the current homeowner, according to the NY Post.
