Renowned Artist and Activist Ai Weiwei Asks $2M for His Minimalist NYC Loft
Ai Weiwei, a world-renowned Chinese artist, vocal activist, and dissident, is selling his longtime New York City apartment. It’s currently staged with some of Ai’s original creations, and, though the pieces are not for sale, they might offer inspiration for whoever purchases his Chelsea loft for $2 million. Perhaps another artist?
The eighth-floor pad is clean and crisp, with white walls throughout presenting a blank canvas for a new owner. South-facing windows and 12-foot-high ceilings forge a gallery-like space for displaying a significant art collection. Ai’s circa-1983 painting Dancers hangs over the dining room table and his Marble Chair sculptures are in the living room, as detailed by Bloomberg.
The 1,409-square-foot condo is uncluttered and airy with splashes of blue in the kitchen and bathrooms just to jazz things up. Leaning itself far more to focus, creativity, or tranquility than hosting, it has one bedroom and two full bathrooms. Ai bought the condo back in 2008, so the minimalist setup seems to have served him well for the past 15 years.
The unit is located on West 25th Street inside Loft 25. The building offers luxurious amenities, like a 24-hour doorman, a rooftop deck, outdoor garden space, and a fitness center. Kyle Blackmon of Compass holds the listing.
