This summer, coastal grandmother has some competition. “Rich leather tones, moody hues, dark walls,” is how celebrity designer Shea McGee described the new trend on The Today Show. McGee, who you might know from Netflix’s Dream Home Makeover, coined the timeless “grandpa chic” look featuring dark colors and a preppy country club aesthetic. The designer achieved the look with a wood coffered ceiling, black steel doors, and a black marble fireplace. The tufted emerald green sofa is paired with Studio McGee's Emma Large Side Table in Navy and Caron Floor Lamp. "I love that it’s so rich in texture. The collected feel is one-of-a-kind. You walk in and it immediately feels different than any other space in the home," the designer says.Photograph by Lucy Call"I wanted it to feel dark and moody in here, like an old lounge," designer Shea McGee says. A worn leather Eames lounge chair, the galvanized metal locker, and a lifetime collection of books and artwork round out the grandpa chic look.Photograph by Tria Giovan"My favorite detail in this space is the oval porthole that connects the two spaces, as well as the millwork on the ceiling, which is reflective of boat ribbing," says architect Cathy Purple Cherry. To achieve this look, a trio of Urban Electric's Mac Light in black with a hewn brass finish hangs above a pool table from Brunswick. Saddle stools from 1stDibs and duck decoy signage bring some extra personality to the space. But the fun doesn't end there. "My favorite element of this space is the monochromatic, slate blue custom built-ins in the office beyond that contain a beautiful display of classic books," Purple Cherry says.Photograph by Durston SaylorFrom the bar area to the billiards room, this residence boasts the ultimate man cave designed by architect Cathy Purple Cherry.
