Tom Petty’s Beloved Midcentury Malibu Beach House Sells for Above Asking

Tom Petty’s former Malibu pad has officially sold over asking, reeling in a cool $10.25 million. The late musician’s wife, Dana Petty, put the home on the market in December 2022 with the price tag of $9.85 million and it went into contract within 10 days, before closing on the last day of February.

The late, great singer-songwriter treasured the beach house for years before his unexpected passing in 2017. In fact, Mrs. Petty stated via email that “Tommy loved that the beach house was pretty much all original, built in 1950, with a cabin feel. We spent a lot of time there with friends and family.”

With 66 feet of beach frontage in the backyard, plus an ultra-private brick patio, and a guest house/music studio, the quaint three-bedroom, three-bathroom midcentury-style home is a simple but perfect retreat. And, according to the listing agent, Chris Cortazzo, Petty thought so too. The ‘American Girl’ singer enjoyed the home’s unpretentious spirit and spent every holiday here. “What a luxury for a massive celebrity to walk on the beach and not be bothered,” Cortazzo shared at the time it listed.

“Tommy always had his recorder and guitar, as he was always writing and creating,” Mrs. Petty reminisced back in December. “I remember him writing so many songs there. Three that come to mind are Good Things Coming and Mudcrutch’s songs Beautiful Blue and Topanga Cowgirl.”

Ultimately paying $400,000 above asking, the unknown buyer must find it pretty sweet now to follow in the ‘Free Fallin” singer’s footsteps. Chris Cortazzo of Compass, who sold the property to the Pettys in 2010, represented this listing and sale as well.
