Tom Petty’s Classic Midcentury Malibu Beach House Just Listed for Almost $9.9M

A feel-good beach house harkening to retro and classic Malibu has hit the market. Most recently home to Tom Petty and his wife Dana Petty, it’s all about easy California coastal living here. One can put on ‘American Girl’ or ‘Wildflowers,’ sit on the deck, and watch the waves after buying the celebrity property now listed for $9.85 million.

Purchasing the three-bedroom dwelling in 2010, the iconic musician cherished it for years before his unexpected passing in 2017. In a statement via email, Mrs. Petty reminisces that “Tommy loved that the beach house was pretty much all original, built in 1950, with a cabin feel. We spent a lot of time there with friends and family.”

Cabin-like indeed, the midcentury house opts for a wood-clad look rather than the light and bright vibe that dominates home design today. Ever-so-cozy, the house offers just three bedrooms and the primary suite even has a quaint fireplace for keeping warm in the winter.

Beyond the home’s cool and relaxed aesthetic, it has more to offer buyers with its legendary music status. Mrs. Petty reflects, “Tommy always had his recorder and guitar, as he was always writing and creating. I remember him writing so many songs there. Three that come to mind are Good Things Coming and Mudcrutch song’s Beautiful Blue and Topanga Cowgirl.”

Off the ultra-private brick patio, the guesthouse/music studio equipped with a full bathroom is where the late artist may have retreated for total creativity. For a musician in search of an inspiring getaway, it doesn’t get much better than this gem of a listing. Did we mention it has 66 feet of beach frontage?

Chris Cortazzo of Compass sold the home to the Pettys 12 years ago and also holds the listing now. Cortazzo shared, “When Tom first walked into the home, he just loved the essence and the spirit. He loved its originality—it was unpretentious which was very much his spirit. Every holiday was celebrated there. What a luxury for a massive celebrity to walk on the beach and not be bothered.”
