For foodie Manhattanites in search of a country estate, the Hudson Valley town of Warwick is a great place to look. In 2021, the New York Times called it “under the radar,” which is always good when you’re buying. And, the hamlet has surprisingly become a bustling haven of restaurants. If that sounds exciting to you and you’re not afraid of some major acreage, this new listing is a must-see.
Longhouse Farm in Warwick spans 11+ acres and is asking $3.875 million after lots of love from its sellers. The property was purchased shortly before the pandemic by Rich and Jacqueline Mafhouz, who oversaw a total renovation and restoration. It was executed according to Jacqueline’s vision and done with utmost care.
While some parts of the structures look more contemporary now, the roots of the home stretch back to the 18th century and the estate’s history has been studied recently. A report done in 2022 by architect James Sexton delves into the property’s unique architecture, which is an artful combination of Greek Revival and Italianate styles. And, Sexton deduced that the barn on the property was the first structure, circa 1790, while the main home came later in 1850.
Driving onto the estate, all the effort put into the property is immediately apparent. Flourishing landscaping and rolling hills give way to the clapboard-style main home that spans almost 6,500 square feet. Its foyer is a timeless showstopper, inviting you in with the balanced formality and charm black-and-white checkered flooring always seems to provide. Further into the floor plan, the kitchen also especially stands out. Anchored by a strong central quartz island, chef’s can play around with top-of-the-line appliances from Subzero and LeCornue.
While the estate certainly has a traditional upstate New York feel, the newly installed pool and pergola take it up a level to rival the chic retreats of the Hamptons, and at a much more reasonable price. Other exciting outdoor perks include the 9-stall horse barn, a trout-fed stream, and fenced pastures. The original barn on the property also holds its own guest suite complete with an upstairs loft and fully-equipped kitchen so guests could easily stay a while.
Stacey Pinkas and John Oliveira of Douglas Elliman hold the New York listing.
