When the homeowner’s resume touts “Instagram cofounder,” you can bet the landscape design will be picture perfect. After designer Todd Peddicord reimagined this young California couple’s new home, they craved a backyard that could match the quality of their interiors. “The yard was nicely landscaped, but there was nothing to it,” Peddicord remembers. “I approached it the same way I do with an interior. No boundaries, no limits, let’s discuss your ideal space.”

Before: The existing backyard was a blank canvas for Peddicord to reimagine.

In this case, the homeowners wanted a really special swimming pool, a seating and dining area on the concrete patio, and a separate garden area. “I gather all of that information and then do two things: give them what they want, and also augment that with some things they haven’t asked for and might not be aware they want or need,” the designer notes.

The homeowners prefer intimate hangouts over large parties, so Peddicord created several cozy seating areas—a fireplace with a sofa and chairs, a dining table for six and a built-in buffet space, and floating ottomans placed all around. “There are little destination spots to hang out throughout the yard,” he says.

Finally, Peddicord was tasked with creating an outdoor barbecue area for the homeowner who prefers to smoke meat over cooking on oversized grills. “He really wanted the Big Green Egg,” the designer recalls. “I pushed for the sink—when you’re cooking and handling meats, you need to be able to wash your hands.”

So, the designer incorporated the grill and sink into a spacious outdoor kitchen featuring Pro-Fit Modera Ledgestone by Cultured Stone. He also envisioned the large countertop acting as a buffet for larger gatherings down the road. “In those decked-out outdoor kitchens, you end up lacking counter space,” Peddicord says. “I said, let’s make it huge. I want you to have room to the left of the Green Egg for your meat and the right for spices.”

The outdoor kitchen also incorporates a storage cabinet in the base to house the couple’s pizza ovens. Its stainless steel doors complement the dark gray gradients at play in the Pro-Fit Modera Ledgestone (chosen in the Carbon colorway).

“This was a material I fell in love with and thought ‘I’ll find a home for this.’ It has such a unique color palette and really plays with the eye due to its varying relief patterns.” Peddicord says. “A big approach I take in my outdoor spaces is really to elevate them with quality materials. You often see a beautiful backyard with the same stone throughout and in the kitchen area. I like to diversify the materials. There’s so much more visual interest, and it really pops.”

By making the barbecue area different from the rest of the backyard, Peddicord was really able to take the design to the next level. “I was trying to keep things simple, modern, and clean,” he says. “But you still want a visual impact. You create that by complementing or contrasting materials.”
