Tour the $12.2M Former Malibu Beach House of ‘King of Cool’ Steve McQueen
Call it The Great Escape! The former Malibu home of iconic antihero actor Steve McQueen listed recently for $12.2 million. Known as the ‘King of Cool,’ McQueen had a suave presence, but clearly also had great taste in homes. Just a few months after hitting the market in April, the pricey oceanfront abode he once owned is already pending.
It’s unsurprising that McQueen, who perhaps is only rivaled by James Dean in the “cool guy” category, should have held such a sleek and breezy property. Newly remodeled in the years since the late actor’s time here, the beach house stands flush with appealing amenities—none the more so than direct beach access. Set just off Broad Beach, it enjoys a cove location that provides peace and quiet, but also a stunning backdrop for glamorous get-togethers.
From the street, the home sits unassumingly behind a gate. But from the beach, it’s all glass and smooth stucco the color of sand. To relish in the views and seaspray, a large deck and bevy of balconies are spread throughout the levels. But you don’t have to be outside to appreciate it all. A peek inside reveals open spaces with a strong population of windows, oversized and geometric. These light and bright interiors offer five bedrooms and five bathrooms within 3,307 square feet.
Icons like McQueen, Judy Garland, and Jack Lemmons all gravitated toward Malibu in their day, and celebrities continue to in the 21st century. Could the buyer be another big name seeking to put down roots by the beach? It’s a mystery, but Shen Schulz of Sotheby’s International Realty holds the listing now in contract.
