Unique Products for Your Outdoor Oasis

Connecticut's top sources for creative outdoor decorations

Bright Ideas
Pickets is where I go to find unexpected outdoor decoration like cast-stone books to scatter along a garden path, sweet
little faux bois planters or the perfect
outdoor lanterns. Owner Laura Baker
had the charming idea of placing their
signature battery candles inside iron cages hung in tree branches for a bit of magic on a summer night. Pickets, 1894 Bronson Rd., Fairfield, 203-254-0012,

Mod in the USA
When I’m considering a mod mood for my patio, Design Solutions is my go-to source for vibrant, playful outdoor accents. I always find inspired pieces in their seasonal collections, sourced almost exclusively in the U.S. New this year: the Elwynn faux bois bench, whose steel framework is sculpted to look like branches. Design Solutions, 146 Elm St., New Canaan, 203-966-3116, dsnewcanaan.com.

Rock of Ages
The Elemental Garden is a haven for one-of-a-kind antique and vintage European garden antiques—urns, finials, fountains, statuary—with gorgeous, weathered patina. It’s well worth a drive to explore this trove firsthand as owners Tracey Young and Dennis Kaylor extol the history of each piece. The Elemental Garden, 259 Main St., South Woodbury, 203-263-6500, theelementalgarden.com.

Kitchen Confidential
New Preston Kitchen Goods is my secret weapon for effortlessly chic table settings. CIA alumnus Martin Rook curates a thoughtful collection of professional-quality cookware, lovely tabletop pieces and irresistible treats. I’ve got my eye on Iittala’s jaunty porcelain pattern of water lilies and dragonflies. New Preston Kitchen Goods, 11 East Shore Rd., New Preston, 860-868-1264,

Wonder Emporium

Suzanne Cassano and Richard Lambertson are masters of the irreverent, well-edited mix. Their Privet House boutiques are like a cabinet of high-end curiosities, where I go for accessories, such as colorful throws to enliven the terrace. These hurricane lanterns are part of their Privet House Collection for Target. Privet House, 18 Grigg St., Greenwich, 203-340-9544, and 4 Cornwall Rd., Warren, 860-868-1800, privethouse.com.
