You Can Live Like French Royalty in this $17.5 Million Château

A 28 room French château in Nassau County is on the market for $17.5 million. Not all of the French imports on Long Island’s North Shore are Burgundy wines or Louis XVI chairs. In the 1920s, Ashbel H. Barney, son of the president of the Knickerbocker Trust Company, purchased an 18th-century château near Dijon, France—it purportedly belonged to Voltaire’s mistress—and shipped it to Upper Brookville. The six-bedroom home at 27 Wolver Hollow Road, listed for $3.5 million with Kevin Daigh of Douglas Elliman, features herringbone floors, wood paneling, and an updated kitchen and bathrooms. For those who are content with a mere copy, nouveau-French architecture abounds in the area. Consider the 28-room limestone mansion at 15 Dupont Court, co-listed for $17.5 million with Douglas Elliman’s Maggie Keats and Town Residential’s Prince Dockery. “It recalls the Petit Trianon at Versailles,” enthuses Keats. Another French take, a six-bedroom mansion at 2 Vista Lane that’s on the market for $5.295 million, boasts a grand brick-and-stone exterior designed by California architect Paulette Trainor. Ross Nodell and Tsui Chi Chang of Spire Development have the listing.
